Smt. Basavarajeswari was a respected public leader and former Union Minister
widely known for her contributions to public service and social development. She played an active role in national governance and worked toward welfare-oriented initiatives, particularly in the areas of community upliftment and inclusive growth.
Remembered for her simplicity, commitment, and people-centric approach, she earned wide respect across political and social circles. Her legacy continues to inspire educational and social institutions dedicated to service, empowerment, and nation building.
After serving the nation for nearly four decades, she envisioned providing quality education to the students of Bellary. It was her deep conviction that education should be a joyful experience that nurtures young minds at their impressionable age and equips them with the knowledge and skills needed to face the challenges of a competitive world.
She actively participated in politics beginning in 1957. Her major roles and responsibilities include:
- Member, Karnataka Legislative Assembly (1957–1972)
- Deputy Minister for Social Welfare & Minor Irrigation, Government of Karnataka
- Member, Karnataka Legislative Council (1980–1983)
- Member of Parliament — 8th, 9th, and 10th Lok Sabha from the Bellary Constituency (from 1984)
- Union Minister of State for Women & Child Development (1993–1995)
- Represented India at the World Women’s Conference in Beijing, China, in 1995 as a Union Minister
- Participated in SAARC meetings and traveled to and addressed delegations in several foreign countries

About T.E.H.R.D
Tungabhadra Education, Health & Rural Development Trust (R), Ballari, is a registered public charitable trust established in the year 1981 under the Indian Trust Act (Reg. No. 106/81–82). The Trust is dedicated to promoting quality education in the fields of Science, Engineering & Technology, and Management, with a strong commitment to academic excellence.
The Trust manages and operates several educational institutions and has been granted 12A and 80G exemptions by the Income Tax Department.
T.E.H.R.D Trust was founded by a group of dedicated philanthropists with a vision to advance education and social development. Over the years, the Trust has grown significantly and now has seven institutions under its umbrella, covering multiple disciplines of education.
Since its inception, the Trust has been actively engaged in various welfare activities in line with its objectives. In 1992, it established Sanjay Gandhi Polytechnic, Ballari, to provide quality technical education, and the institution is now well established. This initiative was followed by the establishment of other technical institutions, including Ballari Institute of Technology & Management, Ballari, and Ballari Industrial Training Center, Ballari
