Choosing A College Through Its Placement Record And Career Prospects
Every engineering college seems to say that it has good placements. Two colleges were visited, but nothing very different was heard at either. Opinions are collected from a cousin, a neighbour and the coaching class. Nothing is settled by any of it. Meanwhile, the admission dates keep coming closer. So to find the best college for placements, some checking has to be done by the family itself, and it is not very difficult.
Decode The Numbers Before Trusting Them
Packages are mentioned in almost every placement report, but what the words actually mean is seldom told to students. The highest package is received by only one student in the whole batch. Meanwhile, most of the average packages are calculated by totalling every salary and dividing it by the count of students who got offers.
Take a batch of 100. One student is offered ₹40 lakh a year and the rest of the offers are somewhere around ₹4 lakh. The ₹40 lakh is what gets printed on the banner, naturally. But the ₹4 lakh is what most of that batch will be living on. This is why the average should be looked at first, and the median, which is the middle salary when all the offers are lined up, should be asked for too. All three figures for the same batch ought to be requested in writing before any fee is paid.
Find Out What Happens Before The Final Year
On most placement pages, the logos of big companies are displayed first, and the numbers are left for later. How many students were taken by each company is rarely shown. They seldom mention the type of roles and packages offered, though a developer job and a designation in business analysis are not the same thing, even when one company name is printed on both. For anyone comparing the top engineering colleges in Karnataka for computer science, the job profiles of the last batch are worth requesting along with the company list.
Repeat visits matter too. A company that returns to a campus year after year finds the students useful. One that came once, hired two people, and vanished tells a different story. Ask for the recruiter history of the last three years.
Find Out What Happens Before The Final Year
By the time companies arrive on campus, most of the work has already been done, or has not been done. An internship in the second year makes a bigger difference than most students expect. There is at least one real project to talk about when the interviewer asks what has been built so far, and that question is almost always asked. Mock interviews are held every semester in some colleges and just once, a week before the drive, in others. The placement office can be asked how many were conducted last year and by whom. Sessions that are left optional are usually attended by the same few students, so that should be asked as well. A vague reply says enough.
Give Newer Universities A Fair But Careful Look
Not every promising option has decades of history behind it. Kishkinda University in Ballari was started in 2023, so it is still a young university. Computer science is offered there with AI and ML and also with AI and data science as specialisations. Since only a few batches could have passed out by now, the placement record is bound to be short. How many batches have graduated and what the placement figures cover can be asked about. Current students and recruiters can be spoken to as well, if that is allowed.
Put Every Shortlisted College Through The Same Test
A list of top engineering colleges in Karnataka becomes much easier to judge when identical questions are put to each one. A simple comparison sheet can be kept, with one column per college.
These points are worth recording:
- Placement report for the last two batches
- Highest, average and median package for each batch
- Number of students who were eligible, placed and not placed
- Internship and training support during the course
- Total cost, which includes fees, hostel and travel
If it can be managed, the campus should be visited and a few students who are studying there can be spoken to. Some of what they say may not match the brochure
Ask First, Apply Later
A job cannot be promised by any college, and a college that does promise one should be questioned. Records, processes and clear answers are what can be offered. The best college for placements is likely to be the one where data is shared without much hesitation. Before the admission form is filled, a few questions can be written down and taken along to each campus. Whatever is told there can be compared later at home. The decision can then be taken without any hurry.
